Alina Birkner
Alina Birkner was born in 1989 in Munich, Germany. From 2010-2016 she studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
She lives and works in Munich.
Can you tell us a bit about the process of making your work?
Usually I make small sketches first. After that I choose the one(s) I like best and begin painting soon, as I am very curious how they'll translate on a bigger canvas. As I paint in many layers, there is a drying period in which I work on another painting or just sit and read and write my thoughts down. It is a slow, almost meditative process.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am working freely on more complex paintings. I try not to judge them as much as I used to, embracing the process and their strangeness.
Your gradients are beautiful! In a world where photoshop is prevalent, can you elaborate on the importance of your hand made gradients?
Thank you! I love the perfect imperfection that you only get from working with your hands, transferring a bit of soul onto the canvas, as I see it.
What are some references you draw upon in your work? Are there any themes in particular that you like to focus on when creating?
At the very moment plants. I am inspired by natural force energy manifesting in nature's colours and shapes.
Do you have any shows coming up? Anything else you would like to share?
Only some fairs later this year, if they do take place. I am preparing for next years shows and want to make as many new paintings as possible.
